'HAIRSPRAY' DIRECTOR TO HELM 'ENCHANTED' SEQUEL

Cast your mind back nine years to when Enchanted opened in theaters. That year, sequels in the Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Spider-Man and Shrek franchises topped the box office, joined by the first Transformers movie. Late in November, however, the original fantasy Enchanted emerged as a surprise hit.

Mixing live action with animation, the movie followed Disney princess Giselle, an animated character who was pushed into the live-action hustle and bustle of modern-day New York City. Amy Adams gave a charming performance as Giselle, an utterly beguiling and likable woman; her starring turn boosted her already burgeoning career. The movie did well at the U.S. box office and even better overseas, totaling more than $340 million in worldwide earnings. Three of its original songs, composed by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, received Academy Award nominations.

Naturally, a sequel was quickly envisioned but, as sometimes happens, it's taken years to whip the project into shape. Now, though, Disney is ready to move forward and Adam Shankman (above) is in talks to direct, according to Variety. His credits include the musical Hairspray, Adam Sandler's comedy Bedtime Stories and the musical Rock of Ages.

Reportedly, the sequel, titled Disenchanted, is set 10 years after the events in the original movie, with Giselle questioning her "happily ever after" ending and "accidentally triggering events that make everyone’s lives turn upside-down in both the real world and in the animated kingdom of Andalasia."

Adams is not yet committed to the project. Earlier this year, though, she said: "They’ve been talking about it for a while, so I really embrace and look forward to what they do and hope to be involved." Will other original stars, such as Patrick Dempsey, return? What about Menken and Schwartz?

While those questions remain unanswered for the present, we also wonder if the sequel will retain the original's pleasantly mocking tone, which both honored and gently poked fun at Disney musical stereotypes. We certainly hope that Adams will return and Disenchanted will be as much fun as the original.
